The AeroPel Nanocomposite Protective Layer (NPL), APC400 Ice Protection Series, is a breakthrough solution for the aviation industry

Icephobic

The AeroPel APC400 Icephobic Series limits ice nucleation, reduces ice adhesion strength, and minimizes ice/snow accumulation.

Extensive Testing

Sponsored by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, the AeroPel APC400 Ice Protection NPL was tested by the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (CRREL) with positive results. US Army CRREL called APC400 Ice Protection NPL “the best icephobic coating (they had) ever tested”.

Record Setting

APC400 Ice Protection NPL was confirmed by US Army CRREL to achieve the lowest ice adhesion strength ever recorded.

AeroPel APC400 Series

The AeroPelTM APC400 Ice Protection Series is designed to repel water, limit ice nucleation, and minimize snow accumulation.  Ice protection NPL is stable under extreme UV and zone exposure.

Developed specifically for aviation applications, ice protection NPL uses proprietary nanotechnology to create a super-hydrophobic surface on existing substrates that can repel water and drastically minimize ice buildup.  The US Army CRREL was able to measure a value of 0.71 psi (5.1. kPa) for ice adhesion strength, the lowest value ever recorded.  In addition, ice protection NPL provides excellent corrosion protection for the substrate preventing direct exposure to the environment.

The APC400 Ice Protection Series was tested on a commercial airliner for a period of over eight months to evaluate ice and corrosion protection with positive results.  Operating in the Pacific Islands region, the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer, typically cold soaked from altitude, would allow suspected ice/moisture to accumulate causing corrosion in certain areas over time.  The protection eliminated the accumulation of ice/moisture, and ultimately the corrosion problem, without degradation of the ice protection NPL over the test period.

Ice protection NPL may potentially make the traditional de-icing process obsolete in cold weather operations.  With the ultra-low ice adhesion strength, any accumulation of ice and snow could easily be removed using high pressure air or water eliminating harmful chemicals.
